Nearly twenty years ago Michael Cannon's rediscovery of "The Vagabond" and the publication of The Vagabond Papers uncovered the cruelty and squalor that lay behind the facade of the Victorian Age. John Stanley James proved himself one of Australia's finest investigative journalists. Vagabond Country contains articles written by James under the pseudonym of "The Vagabond" as he toured south-eastern Australia on contract from the Argus and late the Age newspapers to write descriptive sketches of its most rapidly developing areas. Never before published in book form, these articles have been condensed from his massive output of nearly three-quarters of a million words. They form a bridge between memoirs of harsh pioneering days and what we see around us today. First settlement had been succeeded by the gold rush; now the diggers were giving way to a more settled race of homesteaders and town builders. Horseflesh was still important to them, but the Vagabond was able to travel to many places by steam train and steam boat. The electric telegraph was speeding up urgent messages: telephones were just around the corner: already one could sense the impact upon daily living of the age of technology. History lives in the Vagabond, for few communities enjoy such lively first hand accounts of their origins. yet for us the chief fascination of Vagabond Country may lie in the similarities and differences between country life in the 1880s and our life today; in attitudes to conservation, foreigners and women; in descriptions of provincial towns, the Murray River, Walhalla and Lake Tyers; in the working men and women, the tradesmen, selectors and squatters. This is a unique study of the life of vigorous communities poised midway between ancient and modern times. |
