The great French artist Manet said on seeing Velásquezs' paintings in Spain that he was 'the painter's painter. He did ot surprise me but he did enchant me'. The French Impressionists in particular, but also artists such as Picasso, found inspiration in Velásquez' dramatic use of paint and vivid contrasts to create an impressionistic effect of much greater immediacy than that archived by the academic methods of some of his artistic rivals.

Unlike most of his artistic contemporaries in Europe, Velásquez' working life was spent almost entirely within the confines of the Spanish Court, withn its rigid etiquette and fading flory. His meteroic rise to the position of Painter to the King, over the heads of the older, established artists, is a measure of his genius and also of the true friend and connoisseur he found in the King. Yet the nature of his position at Court, with its administrative as well as artistic duties, must have been a constraint in the range of his work. Velásquez' oeuvre is not large and consists mostly of official portraits yet his ability as a painter extended to all fields and pictures such as the Rokeby VEnus and the Medici Landscapes mark high points in the careeer of an artist whose originality and technical ingenuity remain unique in the history of art.
