Obverse: Radiate draped bust of Tetricus II facing right

Reverse: The reverse has been struck with a worn die

GAIVS PIVS ESVVIVS TETRICVS was the son of Tetricus I, who was serving as Governor of Aquitania in 270 when Victorinus was murdered.  Through the influence of Victoria, Victorinus' mother, Tetricus I was hailed as Augustus of the Gallic Empire, and Tetricus II became Caesar.  In 273 the Roman Emperor Aurelian decided to subdue the Gallic Empire, and invaded Gaul.  The armies of the Tetrici and Aurelian met in 273 on the Catalaunian Plains and after a brief struggle, the Tetrici surrendered.  They graced Aurelian's triumph in 274, but were pardoned and Tetricus II became a senator.  He died of old age.
