VINTAGE/ANTIQUE WOODEN CANTEEN

 ~ CLAD IN ANIMAL HIDE ~

SYMBOLIC DECOR

This magnificent artifact is in superb condition, looks like it has hardly been used.

The canteen itself appears to be of a light but very strong wood - possibly the same as the mouth at the top, but I am not absolutely certain as the whole thing from the neck down is covered in the animal hide.

The hide looks like buffalo or cow.

The shape could be best described as slightly oval and flat - much like you would expect the old style canteens to be.

At the bottom there are four distinctive feet allowing the canteen to free-stand, these are each covered by a small section of the same black leather on the rest of the piece.

The black leather is both intentionally ornate, and seems to by symbolic - the floral design in the centre obviously means something.

I am aware that this could be a wine 'gourd', but with the leather strap would seem to be more practical for a horse rider or foot soldier.

I am only guessing about the uses, and am welcome to hear any suggestions from the magnificent eBay knowledge base worldwide. Please feel free to comment.

However, one thing I am certain of is that this was brought over from Poland mid last century, so it is of Eastern European origin, possibly Poland or even Russia.

For the age, the condition is outstanding. I do note however a whitish powder on the leather strapping in parts, I believe that this could be a dried residue from a leather polish of some kind, and it is mainly on the 'thin' side of the canteen.
