VINTAGE EMPIRE WAIST DRESS & COAT GALANOS 1959

Fabulous green black and red plaid wool in nubby tweed: knee length dress has empire waist with darted sleeveless bodice, the skirt has a couple of box pleats under the bust darts in front the back is straight with a hidden zipper- metal and a small kick pleat. It’s lined in black silk. The jacket is the real interest of this suit; close fitting just under the bust in front and under the side seams dropping to the length of the skirt in the back. The back features a straight yoke with the fabric of the coat being gathered in the center. It closes with 3 large buttons into French buttonholes. It’s lined only around the top to the waistline. It has ¾ sleeves and a unique large fringed collar. The label is Galanos it also has a Blums-Vogue Chicago label.
This is an fabulous addition to any designer collection. The owner only had the latest designs of the era, in this case 1940's and 50's.

James Galanos ([gulAn´Os]) (born 1925) is an American fashion designer, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His clients have included such celebrities as Diana Ross and actress Rosalind Russell. His most famous client is former First Lady Nancy Reagan, wife of former President Ronald Reagan, for whom he designed gowns. His work is characterized by exacting craftsmanship, particularly in the extensive use of hand beading, full, loose dresses and chiffon coats over simple sheaths, as well as the extensive use of silk fabrics.
