The Australian 1966 round fifty cent coin was made of 80% silver and 20% copper, but as the value of a free-floating silver price became higher, the coins' bullion value became more valuable than their face value and so were withdrawn from circulation. There were many complaints from mainly elderly Australians, as they found this round coin the same shape and size as the round 20 cent coin, meaning that many turned up to banks and building societies during the late 1960's complaining that they had not fought the turks at Gallipoli to be gipped by unscrupulous bank tellers and fruit machine vendors!
Alas in 1969, the coin was withdrawn and a dodecagonal shaped coin introduced. Since then, many collectors have hoarded these, similar to the US Kennedy Half Dollars which I also have for auction!
