VINTAGE STAFFORDSHIRE MUG with 1885 wooden GOTTLIEB DAIMLER MOTORCYCLE (see history info below)
Great, collectable mug by Staffordshire for the automobile enthusiast. I believe the mug is circa 1960/70's and features an old 1885 wooden Gottlieb Daimler motorcycle...there is also a picture included of a "real" one of these motorcycles and info found on the internet for some history behind the illustration on the mug. There are 2 illustrations and the word DEUTSCHLAND on the back and front of mug. The words and vehicles are etched into the ceramic surface. Mug measures 10cm tall x 7.5cm wide across the top rim, 6cm across the base. There is also a similar mug on offer separately featuring a 1907 Itala motor vehicle. On the bottom of mug is moulded STAFFORDSHIRE TABLEWARE - MADE IN ENGLAND. Very good condition, no cracks of chips.
History of the Gottlieb Daimler Gottlieb Daimler is largely credited with building the first motorcycle in around 1885, wheels front back and a smaller spring-loaded outrigger stabiliser wheel on each side. It was constructed mostly of wood, with the wheels being iron-banded wooden-spoked. It was powered by a single-cylinder 264cc Otto-cycle engine, and possibly a spray-type carburetor. Power Output 0.5hp @ 600rpm Daimler’s son Paul became the "first motorcyclist" on Top Speed 7mph or so.
