OPAL: All of Nature’s splendour seems to be reflected in the manifold opulence of fine Opals: fire and lightning, all the colours of the rainbow and the soft shine of far seas. Australia is the classical country of origin. Almost ninety-five per cent of all fine opals come from the dry and remote outback deserts. Numerous legends and tales surround this colourful gemstone, which can be traced back in its origins to a time long before our memory, to the ancient dream time of the Australian aborigines.
Note: As Opals are relatively fragile (5-6.5 hardness) they must not be cleaned in ultrasonics. Instead, wash them in water with a mild soap and soft cloth
The body tone of an opal (also termed base tone or background colour) refers to its relative darkness, while ignoring its paly-of-colour. It is assessed face-up from N1 (jet black) to N9 (white) as per AGIA body tone chart:
BLACK OPALS – show a play-of-colour within or on a black body tone compliant with N1 to N4, DARK OPALS – show a play-of-colour within or on a dark body tone compliant with N5 to N6, LIGHT OPALS – show a play-of-colour within or on a light body tone compliant with N7 to N9.
The brightness of an opal considers the brightness and clarity, the amount and density as well as the directionality of the play-of-colour and is rated on a scale from 1 to 5:
Level 1: FAINT – Shows play-of-colour only under sunlight. Level 2: DULL – Some dull play-of-colour under sunlight or spotlight. Level 3: BRIGHT – Nice play-of-colour under sunlight or spotlight. Level 4: VERY BRIGHT – shows a nice play-of-colour under low light and very good under sunlight or spotlight. Level 5: BRILLIANT – shows a bright crisp mirror-like play-of-colour under sunlight or spotlight and often seems even brighter in subdued light. |
