Anne Wicklow returns to Moura, the home she shared with her late husband, to assume the duties of housekeeper for the new tenants.  The mysterious Maitre Stavko and his eerily beautiful daughter, Tyra, are running Moura as an academy for young ladies. 

Anne must come to grips with the ghosts of her own memories, as well as the strangely disturbing aura at Moura itself.  While starving and desperate wolves prowl just beyond the doors, more sinister events occur within.  And despite her revulsion towards the Maitre, Anne is irresistibly drawn to him, mesmerised by his unnatural powers.  But she also finds herself falling in love with the dashing captain who comes to teach the girls, despite the fact that he is Tyra’s lover.

In the northern England village of Maidenmoor, Anne Wicklow uncovers the story of the Devil-Vicar, a man who was burnt to death twenty years ago in a devastating fire.  Now it appears that the powers of the Devil-Vicar may reach beyond the grave.  A terrible evil presence is stalking the village, brutally murdering those villagers who were involved in the fire twenty years before.  

Anne begins to dig into the past in an attempt to stop the killing.  The more she discovers about the infamous Devil-Vicar, the more she finds herself falling in love with him.  But is her love strong enough to overcome a ghost hungry for vengeance
