Offered to ebay members without reserve is this lovely Volkswagen Passat V6 luxury sedan.

Representing the 5^th generation of the Passat evolution, this B5 variant shares the same platform as the hugely successful Audi A4 and was the catalyst for a new design language for Volkswagen, thus catapulting the marque to the high social stature it enjoys today.  The curvy lines, heavily raked windscreen and smooth underpinnings helped give the B5 Passat an incredibly low coefficient of drag, rated at just 0.27 – lower, in fact, than many sports cars.  As a comparison, the C6 Corvette is rated at 0.29.

The all new Passat was heavily re-engineered and featured a sophisticated four-link front suspension assembly which was specifically designed to eliminate torque steer.  A large focus was also put on to occupant safety with the B5 Passat featuring drivers and passengers airbags, ABS brakes, anti-burst door locks, heavy duty intrusion bars and a dynamic safety cell system to aid in roll over protection.

Naturally the 5^th generation Passat has been a global success and has won many prestigious awards including ‘Best Car Buys’ best family car in 1998, ‘What Car?’ best medium sized sedan in 1998, ‘Auto Express’ best family car in 1999 and ‘Used Car Buyer’ most sensible car & best family car award in 1999.

The example on offer was delivered new in Australia during 1998 and presents in deep blue with a luxurious cabin trimmed in oatmeal leather with woodgrain support and comes equipped with climate control, a factory sunroof, a CD player, central door locking, ABS brakes, alloy wheels, dual airbags and more.

The Passat is to be supplied with two keys and has now covered approx 171,000k’s.

Given the rather subjective nature involved when assessing the condition of older vehicles, your personal inspection is strongly advised.  In this way, you may form your own opinions of the car and can judge whether or not it will meet with your expectations.

Offered as a guide, my opinions of the car and its condition are as follows:

BODY & PAINT:  Is in good general condition with imperfections as to be expected for a vehicle of this age and mileage, the worst of which would be an unfortunate scrape to the nearside rear wheel arch (though this has been touched up).  Other imperfections are minor and should be considered as consistent with a car that has lived its life in the city.  That said, the deep blue paint work remains in good condition and holds a lovely gloss while the body shows no sign of previous accident repair.  With its factory alloy wheels this is still quite a handsome car and one of which the new owner is sure to be proud.

TRIM & INTERIOR:  Is in lovely condition with minimal wear.  All leatherwork remains in good order with no rips, tears or heavy scuffing and the hides are supple while still holding good colour.  The carpets, door trims and dash are all in good shape and there appears to be no UV damage to the trim.  On balance, the cabin of this Passat remains a lovely place to spend time – it is clean, neat and tidy.

MECHANICALS:  This VW is delightful on the road.  Everything seems to function as it should and the car is incredibly hard to fault with the exception of the air conditioning which is not cold (though the system itself functions perfectly).  It starts first time, every time and fires strongly on all cylinders with no smoke, no loss of fluids and no obscure noises.  The V6 engine is a born performer boasting 280Nm of torque available at just 3,200RPM.  Able to return as good as 7.3L/100k’s and offering sprightly, energetic performance all the while, this really is a wonderful vehicle to be in command of.  The 5 speed tiptronic gearbox performs without fault.  The brakes all feel excellent, the steering is sharp and direct and all electrics appear to be in full operation with no warning lights illuminated on the dash.  The Passat maintains a consisten opperatintemperature, it does not appear to be using or loosing any fluids, it is smooth, quiet and it is very refined.  Again, with its age in mind, this is a particularly nice car to drive 

While not a new car, this Passat is sure to be a terrific buy and, given its road manners, I would not hesitate to drive it interstate.

As mentioned previously, I advise and welcome any interested party to come and take the car for a test drive themselves or to send a friend, relative or mechanic in to inspect it on your behalf – being interstate is certainly no excuse!  As I say in every one of my listings: common sense should tell you that my personal opinions reflected in the above listing and 12 digital photographs are no substitute for your own detailed inspection and test drive.  Your bid is to BUY – no exceptions!

I have no idea what would be required of this car to pass RWC – I am not a mechanic so I can not speak to this subject with any authority.
