Vintage Police Whistle Stamped: The ACME CITY Patent Whistle Patient # 5727.08 This Whistle was probably nickle plated but now shows lots of wear. This great collectible Whistle is made by the famous Police Whistle maker Hudson and is quite an old model. It is around 3 1/4 inches long. The chain loop is still tight and it's two toned note is still very load. Remember the old British movies in the back streets of London where the Bobbies would be chasing the criminals. Although the whistle is old and worn the stamping is still easily read. You'd have to expect some wear because it could have been used in many police arrests! ***BUY WITH CONFIDENCE REFUND POLICY*** Some Trivia: Up until 1883 Police had used hand rattles to attract attention, similar to those used at football games. Then in 1883 the Metropolitan Police invited proposals for a more effective alternative to the rattle. J Hudson was convinced the whistle was the way to go but he needed the right note. One day he dropped his violin on the floor and as the strings broke he found that this was the note he wanted. They discovered that the discordant, two toned sound the whistle made could carry for over a mile. He was awarded the contract and today the Met still use the Hudson Whistle.
