Once you have slept on linen sheets, nothing else is quite the same, far superior to cotton even the finest Egyptian cotton. Linen has a rich history, used since Biblical times and renowned for its inherent resistance to dirt and stains. Robust yet soft, the colour lightens and the fabric softens with use. Because of its ability to absorb moisture without feeling damp linen remains cool in summer and warm in winter. Linen also drapes beautifully, and makes wonderful curtains, it is hard wearing so is good for cushions and upholstery.
Vintage French Linen Sheet Monogram SD + Flowers + Jour

|
This fantastic dowry or marriage sheet is made from thick and strong creamy white French linen metis, a blend of cotton and linen.
There is a centre seam which shows the age to be before 1908.
The lovely monogram is handworked in a raised white silk stitch, and measures a huge 10.5" wide by 4.5" high, or 27cm by 11cm. The initials are very raised and decorated with embroidered dots.
There are 2 flowers on either side of the monogram, interspersed by double rows of drawn threadwork with a diamond pattern of embroidered dots above and below the drawnwork.
The flower embroidery has petals, swirls, dots, and love knot stitch, all done by hand. Altogether very pretty, and a labour of love.
To finish off the decoration there is a large band of cross ladderwork above the hem.
The sheet measures 68" wide by 120" long or 172cm by 300cm, and would be exquisite as a curtain panel, or as intended, decorating a bed in a shabby chic, country, or chateau style room.
This sheet would have been part of the bride's 'trousseau' or dowry linen with both the bride and groom's initials embroidered onto the linen. Some of the trousseau the bride would have made herself, others would have been given as wedding presents.
This sheet is in very good lovingly used condition. Please see the photos as there is a section where the centre seam is coming undone, and one of the ladderwork 'jours' has come undone. There is also a mark one the 'wrong' side which doesn't come through.
From a smoke free home.

Once you have slept on linen sheets, nothing else is quite the same. Robust yet soft, the colour lightens and the fabric softens with use. Linen also drapes beautifully, so makes wonderful curtains.
Most of the items that I list will be vintage or used, so may show signs of their previous history, which is the whole charm of these pre-loved items. If you are looking for a pristine, unused item, then my finds are probably not for you. I do my best to describe their condition accurately. Generally I find that these items have been cherished possessions at a time when people did not live in such a throwaway society, so they made things to last, and took care of them.
