Vintage HOTELPOMEROY Vintage Barkcloth Era EAMES Fabric |
|
Its summer and its been a hot and dry one so far, so I thought I'd put out some tempting pieces for all you lovers of this great stuff. I have adjusted my prices to make owning this great stuff more affordable in these tough economic times. Hipasbury stands with its customers as we get through to better times...that are just on the horizon. Have faith and reflect on the true treasures in life...health, family and love...its that simple...
Over the years I've gotten emails from customers who ask how I remember where I found my fabrics....well I have a memory that is amazingly photographic, I remember the marquis that hosted the hotel names and remember all the details of going into the hotels and salvaging what I could. Plus I labeled each box and bin of items from specific hotels...I'm not the most organized person, but when it comes to my fabrics I am completely OBSESSIVE. The Hotel Pomeroy was torn down around 1988 when Sid Kramer acquired it through foreclosure, he was a friend of a friend I met at a party in Coconut Grove. He basically gave me the whole contents of the hotel as it was being torn down. I went with my oldest friend, and by that I mean age wise....he was in his 70's while I was a mere 22 year old wet behind the ears preppy! Coming to Miami Beach for some "old soul" nourishment....I've always been drawn to Miami, because I probably lived another fabulous life there in the 40's :) Alexander was a old queen for lack of better words, and he made no bones about being proud of the old queen status he was so deserving. He would call me and say "hello honey its the old queen, when are you coming to visit"...I would show in my fabulous rental convertibles and he would steer me to all the best sales of barkcloth and show my youngness off to his other cronies, a collector and lover like myself, he was an original designer of patterns of barkcloth. Alexander Vonquet was like no one else I knew. He never drove a car and loved to be chauffeured around in convertibles wearing his white sailor hat, rings on every finger and scarves tied around his neck in attempts to hide his wrinkles. Older people have always influenced my life, from the ripe age of 10 when I did my ventriloquist act at Heritage Hall nursing home, where I did my rounds to all my old friends every Saturday....sometimes arriving to find my old friends had passed. So for me it wasn't odd Alexander and I had such a good friendship that age did not preclude. Long gone, Alexander would be tickled I am writing about him....on a computer no less. An old soul who left a rich print on my heart and who influenced my passion and love for these vintage designs. And he loved me, enough to leave me 15 original hand drawn, watercolored paintings of barkcloth designs that never went to print by a fellow artist. I still have them, some are half painted and others complete, old vintage 18 x 24 inch paintings of barkcloth that were used to to design these old barkcloths. I keep saying I will have them all professionally framed and hang them in my house....someday. When we arrived at the Hotel Pomeroy it was a sunny Florida day, this hotel looked like it had been through an attack like Beirut, with an ever present dark cloud looming over it amidst the great sunshine and white sandy beaches that was its front yard. I paid a toll to a drug addict to let us in, who was sleeping in the abandoned once grand lobby where he had acquired squatters rights. Dark hallways of mustiness and the fresh smell of a burning cigarette, a reminder someone else was lurking in the shadows. I scurried to pull all the fabrics from the windows and beds on the first few floors, the other some odd 10 floors were too dilapidated to attempt. The thrill of the experiences were like feeding an addiction, a high of textile sorts...when we were finished Alexander was a sweaty mess and out of breath, telling me I can never do that to him again, that he was too old for these jaunts. Do you know to this day I still wonder what was on those other 10 floors that was torn down and discarded with no value. Those things pain me! I think that is a sign of someone truly obsessed, attached to "things" in a way that becomes an addiction...while I admit to being a addict of this stuff, it could be so much worse an addiction, its not crack or these stories I see on intervention, rather a passion for something innocent of those times...something tangible to grab hold of from that era, something that feeds and nourishes my soul and being...ladies and gentleman, YES I AM A ADDICT...and proud of it :) This panel is a very rare and sought after Eames, tiki, mod cotton/linen mix, very iconic Miami Beach late 50's early 60's, great lines, circles and colors. IT measures 46 wide x 86 long. This was once a drapery panel that was taken apart and washed thoroughly, no odors or imperfections to speak of, ready to design with and make your own, very loungey and great for Eames Era, 50's mod, Hawaiian tiki and so many other styles. It measures 46 wide x 86 long. I have a few more listed ready to make their debut after many years in storage. Immaculate, clean and not an ounce of imperfections.
