Here's an original, Edwardian-style auto tray that I believe dates to the 1920s if not earlier. It's absolutely gorgeous!
For its age, it's in good condition:
- It's made from solid oak and is extremely sturdy. The wood is in excellent condition and craftsmanship is first-rate.
- The table top is made from oak planks 1/2" thick, and has a lovely grain. Under the lower shelf is a cutlery drawer.
- All of the hardware is original, including the hinged metal arms that hold the pembroke sides. All four castor wheels are original, too, and spin freely.
The only blemishes I would call out are some patches on the table top where the varnish has worn off. The finish on the wheels is also worn. There are other marks of normal wear and tear, but they're nothing more than what you'd want to see in the patina of such a lovely, old item.
The auto tray is perfect for the smaller homes of today - it tucks neatly out of the way when it's not in use, but easily expands to become a functional entertainer. Its style and beautiful oak grain also make it an extremely attractive display piece!
Dimensions: The auto tray is 610mm deep x 740mm tall. It's 365mm wide with the sides dropped, and 890mm wide when fully extended.
Pickup is from Rowville, Melway map 73. For a small fee, I can deliver the auto tray to you if you're in metropolitan Melbourne. Viewing prior to the auction is welcomed.

The auto tray easily extends to become a useful table top. Its compact dimensions make it the perfect entertainer for modern homes.
|
The oak grain is magnificent all over the trolley. Here's the middle section of the table top.
|
Here's the lower shelf and drawer front. Both also have a lovely grain.
|
The drawer runs the whole length of the lower shelf. It's divided into two sections with the front half partitioned for cutlery. The original felt is intact and in good condition.
|
All four castor wheels are original. Apart from their finish being worn, they're in terrific condition.
|
Here's the top. You can see the marks of normal wear and tear. I've highlighted the worst of them in this photo.
|
Here's the underside. It's in excellent condition. All of the hardware is original.
