PATHE 'BABY' MOVIE PROJECTOR

with adaptor for large film spools

Interesting antique silent movie projector from around 1925

The Pathe 9.5mm format was very unusual in that the sprocket holes were in the centre of the film between each frame!  As far as I know this is the only format to use such an unconventional setup.

This amazing old machine comes with a number of early 9.5mm Pathé films in their original containers.  These appear to be Australian shot films and look to be in useable condition.  The projector also has a very rare adaptor which allows larger reels of film to be projected.  The two original  Pathé reels shown in the photos are included in the sale.

The projector appears to be largely complete and in working order.  I have run some film through it and it advances as it should.  The original globe holder is in place, but the lamp house has also been adapted to accept a 12 volt globe.  It needs a suitable 12 Volt transformer if the projector is to be used.  There is no in tact bulb with the machine but the base is still in place.  The original variable brightness control is still in the base of the unit but is not connected.

"By the early 1920s, the Société Pathé Frères had built the largest film equipment and production company in the world. To increase their 1922 Christmas sales, they released the first projector meant for home use: the Pathé Baby.

The 9.5 mm Pathé Baby films come in small cassettes holding approximately 30 feet of film that plays for around 60 seconds. What makes it unique is that it has sprocket holes down the center rather than on the sides. The film also has an ingenious little notch cut into each title frame that triggers the projector to stop for a few seconds, even though the operator continues to crank the film, allowing viewers time to read the text."

See also the Pathé BABY camera I have for sale in a different listing.  It was probably the one used to shoot the film included in this sale.
