VINTAGE STANLEY No 4-1/2 SMOOTHING PLANE Made in England This plane has the heavy post war bed see photos 9 & 10 - the sides and sole are about twice the thickness of the USA one of around the same vintage shown in the photos. These planes were made by Stanley in the post war period to compete with the English infill planes of Norris, Spiers etc. The American plane is shown for comparison only and is not included in the Auction. It does not have a "H" on the casting - the English ones never did. THE PHOTOS TELL THE STORY Blade = 2-3/8" wide; 7-1/2" long measured from the cutting edge to the top & 2-1/8" from the bottom of the hole to the cutting edge - close to full length. Body = 10-1/4" long incl overhang, x 3" wide Weight + 2.16 Kg This plane is in good condition and has obviously not had very much use in its life and had been left on a shelf by its previous owner and I have given it a light clean. The blade is in excellent condition and is close to full length. As shown in the photos it still has the original factory grind marks and a lot of the original protective lacquer, as does the back iron. There is some of the usual light rust on the top section of the blade where it has been exposed. I have polished the "rounded" edge of the cap iron where the shavings pass over as it was rusted. The jappaning on the bed and frog is better than 75% and the plating on the lever cap is close to perfect, however, there is a very small chip on either side of the corners of the lever cap as shown in the photos. These chips are less than 1.5 mm and would not affect the use of the plane in any way. All screws etc are in excellent condition and everything works smoothly and correctly. The lacquered hardwood knob and handle are in good condition with no cracks or other damage BUT as is usual with these planes the lacquer has started to crack and peel. Sharpen the blade and it would be ready for use. This little plane is one of the best English No 4-1/2's that I have had and I am sure that you will be very happy with it should you decide purchase it and I am sure that it will give you many years of excellent service. The plane weighs 2.16 Kg + adequate packaging ( bubble wrap/cardboard to protect in transit) therefore it can be sent in a large post bag registered/insured to anywhere in Australia for $13.00. Or can be packed in a box and sent as a parcel at the Australia Post rate if preferred - just let me know what you want before paying. If you prefer any other postage method (express etc) I am happy to oblige as long as Aust Post offers it and you are prepared to pay for it.
