Offered is a very strange vintage or antique collage painting on wooden stretcher I picked up over the weekend. I've never seen anything quite like it. It's very intricate and highly detailed. It measures 15" X 19" and tells a story--no doubt--but I don't quite get its meaning or message.because its done with ancient surrealistic imagery I'm not familiar with. First let me explain the medium: It's an oil painting on canvas interspersed with paper images. The paper images that are added to the oil depict strange-looking men wielding sticks or weapons? (some appear deformed & crippled, some with animals wrapped around their necks). There are also numerous EYES (I counted at least 15) some along the edges, some in the middle of other images. Also 2 old CLOCKS with roman numeral hands. Very surreal (something perhaps Salvador Dali was influenced by as this looks to pre-date Dalis surreal paintings). The canvas & nails appear to be very old (perhaps turn of the 20th century?) and there is considerable age cracking to the painting (but it appears to have no missing pieces). Altho I cannot detect a signature, this highly unusual painting could well turn out to be one of the earliest to use Collage techniques in Oil Painting (I believe I read somewhere that Picasso was the first to use Collage in oil paintings around 1912).Also unique is the back of the paintings canvas where the artist painted (in black) an image of a person smoking a pipe?
