These are gorgeous Waldorf Steiner handmade dolls from Peru.

These dolls are made using natural fibers (from the interior -stuffed with pure sheep's wool- to the doll's hair made from alpaca yarn).

When you buy these dolls, you are giving your support to indigenous women who for the first time have found a sustainable job. The women wash, card and spin the wool used for hair, sweaters and shoes, sewing and knitting all the distinctive clothes. Hand dyed fibers color the hats and ponchos. Much of the dye used is made from local plants. The doll's clothing reflects a variety of styles worn by the rural people.

These Waldorf dolls are the result of a social project working with indigenous women living in a Quechua community in Cusco.

About the artists

These Waldorf dolls are the result of a social project working with indigenous women living in a Quechua community in Cusco, Peru. The project has been running for several years and empowers women by teaching them skills needed to make these dolls and earn a decent and stable income while working not far away from their own homes. The project provides housing for the workshops and has a day-care centre where women can bring their small kids to play and learn while they are working. The women are divided in groups and each group is in charge of a determined activity such as spinning, carding, weaving, cutting the textiles, using the sewing machine, stuffing the dolls, sawing the dolls parts by hand, making the eyes and hair, creating and knitting the outfits, dress the dolls, etc. The project is located outside Cusco and is surrounded by green mountains, the spinners and knitters love to work in the open (see photo top middle and top right).
