ISSUE 77

Story: "Home Is Where The Terror Is"
Summary: Flash Thompson As Stilt-Man, Morlocks
 Arc: Part 1 of "Firebrand

Pete, MJ, May and Lumpkin are at a party in the Poseidon hotel in upper Manhattan. It is a fundraiser for the homeless. There is a young black waitress named Anna. Flash is there but was slightly confused and thought it was a costume ball. He has come as Stilt Man while Felicia has come as ... the Black Cat!

Jonah and Robbie, as sponsors of the project, are also there to give a speech. Pete's Spider-sense keeps going off but he's not sure why. Meanwhile, in the kitchen and basement, something seems to be stalking Anna.

In a silent monologue, Anna makes reference to something that's happened in the Cloak And Dagger title. Back upstairs, a sandbag comes crashing down from the roof. Pete sees the rope has been gnawed through. He also notices the stage supports have been chewed through. Under the stage, Pete is trying to fix things with his web-shooters but the lights go off and things collapse. He notices lots of rats following something large so changes to Spidey and follows.

Anna is down in some sort of bunker with these weird-looking very overweight 'things'. He whisks her away - or tries to - but the creature things attack him along with the rats. Anyway, it all calms down and the creatures are Morlocks (!)

Morlocks apparently live under the city in the sewer and seem to be relatively harmless. Upstairs, the guests are leaving slowly in the dark as Firebrand flies in shooting fire. The building starts to burn with people inside before Cloak And Dagger show up.

ISSUE 78

 Story: "Toast Of The Town"
 Summary: Cloak & Dagger, Morlocks
 Arc: Part 2 of "Firebrand"

Spidey and the Morlocks are struggling to get out of the collapsing basement with Anna. Meanwhile upstairs there's yet another crossover reference. Firebrand is torching the place because his boss Darkhawk didn't like a homeless shelter being built on his turf.

Inside, the Bugle gang, plus Pete's friends are struggling to escape also. There's a super-lame battle between Cloak and Dagger and Firebrand. Meanwhile everyone escapes the building while Spidey concocts a web raft to ride the water in the sewers and get everyone underneath to safety.

There's another lame battle and - of course - Spidey comes out on top with Cloak And Dagger to defeat Firebrand.

ISSUE 79

Story: "First Blood"
 Summary: Silvermane, Killer Androids
Arc: Part 1 of "First Blood"

Peter and Mary-Jane are on a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park when some guys with guns hijack things. Pete is thrown clear and changes to Spidey while the guys with guns threaten MJ to try and find out where Pete is.

It turns out they're androids - called the Silver Squad - who want Pete to get to Spidey. Spider-Man defeats them easily and we see this guy wired up to a wall controlling them. He says they were built by the Tinkerer.

One android remains but the mystery chap changes tact and allows her to cause as much havoc as is necessary to trap Spider-Man. They end up on top of a building before plunging down many storeys to the ground. The smoke clears and the damager android (who now looks like the robot in Terminator) is holding Spidey over her shoulder. The android - who we now know as 'Ripster' carries Spider-Man down into some tunnel where they meet the guy attached to the wall … Silvermane.

ISSUE 80

Story: "This Blood Is My Blood"
 Summary: Silvermane, Black Cat
Arc: Part 2 of "First Blood"

Silvermane has Spider-Man trapped. He is draining Spidey's blood to be re- circulated into his own new cyborg body. He is filming the whole thing so he can replay it to the underworld and reclaim his head-gangster role. Oookkkkaaaay

Meanwhile, MJ - who doesn't know what's happened to Pete - asks Felicia to help her find him. Back at Silvermane's Pete tries to escape but he loses his mask and all the cameras focus on him. He manages to hide his face.

Black Cat shows up but Pete's face is exposed as he scrambles for his mask. There's an explosion and Pete's not sure if the footage of his exposed face has been saved anywhere. Spidey and Black Cat defeat Silvermane and get out after another explosion which Spidey is sure destroyed the tape. In the epilogue, another Silvermane staggers through the wreckage. The first one was yet another android.

ISSUE 81

Story: "Living In Fear"
 Summary: Bloodshed

We start with a two-year ago flashback. Spider-Man stops two crooks stealing a car. The younger one runs for it while Spidey webs the other one up. The older one hurls insults at his fleeing brother - Ricky. After the police arrive, etc the older one (Wyndell) says he's going to skip town and if he gets caught, he'll take it out on the younger one.

Ricky does well in the next few years, becoming a bond trader. At his apartment one day, Wyndell is waiting for him in an armoured suit and calling himself Bloodshed. He is a drugs runner but had to dump his cargo when his ship was boarded by the coastguard. He needs to get $1million in three days.

He tells Ricky he must get it for him through his job or else. Out on the street, Ricky sees Spidey swinging past and calls to him. Bloodshed is watching on though and thinks Ricky is telling Spidey what's going on. He swoops down and starts a fight with Spider-Man.

Spider-Man doesn't want to fight in such a populated area so gets a tracer on Bloodshed and hides away. Bloodshed trashes Ricky's apartment and the tracer falls off. Spidey follows the tracer to Ricky's building and recognises his name in the hallway. At the Bugle, Pete uses the microfiche to trace the name and comes to the wrong conclusion that Ricky is Bloodshed.

Spidey goes to Ricky's work, where Bloodshed is waiting. Spidey realises he is wrong. Bloodshed gets the upper hand but, after Ricky intervenes, Spider-Man fights back and knocks Bloodshed out ready for the police.

ISSUE 82

Story: "Pumping Up"
 Summary: Man Mountain Marko

Spider-Man wakes up in a pile of rubble quite the worse for wear. Ben Urich is there and ask for a statement as we slip into flashback mode… Man Mountain Marko was collecting protection money for the Maggia when he went a bit crazy. He trashed an entire bar – with Spider-Man inside. Ben tells Spidey that Marko took off after kidnapping a kid.

Spidey goes to a gym where Ben said Marko worked out. At the gym, Spidey finds Marko's locker and there are steroids inside. He goes to the owner, who tells him the Maggia souped up Marko's genes to make him stronger. Spidey breaks into the Maggia's offices and takes a rolodex to direct him to Marko's.

Spidey tips off Ben, then heads to the house. Marko gets the better of Spidey as they fight at first but he tires and Spider-Man fights back and knocks him out. Meanwhile, the 'kidnapped' boy was just a fan of Marko's who wanted to be as big as him.
