WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE

the wreck of the minot cd

underdogma ( 2005 ) new \\ unopened \\  mint \\ shrinkwrapped

Megaheavy yet melodic rock action from this Boston band that beats you over the skull with stomping, burly as **** lumberjack sludge riffs and monstrous guitars belting out grooving hard rock anthems with killer catchy hooks and vocal harmonies. Sludge metal meets anthemic rock? Hell yeah.  Looking at the artwork (cool artsy, post-hardcore style imagery), you wouldn't expect it to be as heavy as it is. The riffs are freaking huge, especially when the band launches into one of their trademark slow parts. WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE combines the heaviness of sludge and doom metal with the syncopated pounding of Helmet and a singer that sounds like a cross between a rawer Ian Astbury of The Cult and Glenn Danzig, and adds in almost pop-concise songwriting and cool acoustic tracks that supply an additional Led Zep feel to the album. Wreck Of The Minot is sort of like the melodic doom rock of Goatsnake meets the gnarly backwoods sludge of Scissorfight . Or Crowbar ransacking The Cult 's melodic hard rock. Or Louder Than Love -era Soundgarden jamming with Queens Of The Stone Age . A crushing sophomore album from these guys.

REVIEW FROM THE BOSTON NOISE: In the current metal climate of "let’s see if we can include more time signatures in one song than has ever been done before," We’re All Gonna Die comes as a breath of fresh, nitromethane-laced air. Heavy as hell, but with finely-honed song structures, riffs like I would write if I were a musician, and a singer who can not only carry a melody, he can throw it over his shoulder, drag it back to his pad, and have his way with it. Closest local comparison I can come up with is Roadsaw, but with a little Scissorfight stomp and, weirdly enough, maybe some King’s X to make it sound less like Soundgarden. Okay, that may be meaningless to you, but what it means to me is that there is still hope for those who

lean toward the heavier end of the spectrum but still like to be able to drum along on our buddy’s head while he’s still drunk enough to allow such shenanigans. And lest you stoners think We’re All Gonna Die has forsaken you, fear not...there’s plenty of those fat, oozy guitar chords and Sabbath-y fun you know you need. Essential, if you’re anything like me.

REVIEW FROM SLEAZEGRINDER: Man, the name of the band and the album’s artwork...complete with paranoid sketches of bloody knives and butterflies ...really threw me for a loop. I thought for sure that some label lackey forgot his Prozac, got lost in his precious emotions, and accidentally sent me a spinning disc of screamo swill. I was halfway through my irate e-mail to Underdogma, wherein I was condemning all the scene kids in white belts and their pesky revolution, when I actually put the album on and hit up the label’s site. Turns out that We’re All Gonna Die aren’t skinny Manhattan screamo kids at all, but a trio of Beantown bruisers in trucker hats who play cinder block drudge rock, and The Wreck of the Minot sounds like Pantera

and The Illuminati dipped in a bucket of tar and beer batter, and hung out to dry and cure in the squelching heat. Before long the pungent smell coming off the ripe slab of metal-groove is attracting every rabid dog, killer bee, and homeless scab within a three-mile radius. And it turns out that Underdogma boasts a line-up of equally meaty bands, like Roadsaw, Ironboss, Throttlerod, and Alabama Thunderpussy. Man, I was way off. Still, I think I’ll send my e-mail anyway. I don’t like wasting good hate.

REVIEW FROM ABSOLUT METAL: Local (Boston) boys We're All Gonna Die have unleashed their 2nd album to an ever growing underground fanbase who have heard the band's first album, "Go To Hell" and/or seen them live. The first track on "The Wreck Of The Minot" starts off with a riff that could make you swear you were listening to Anthrax. Further into the album we hear We're All Gonna Die's more signature sound...kind of like what Helmet would sound like if they were into stoner rock, with some Cult-ish vocal stylings, stomping riffs, grooves, etc. Songs like "I Remember", and "One Thirteen" show the range of this band's sound and influences, going from all out thrash to Beatles-esque melody. If you're into Clutch I'd recommend these guys also. This album is pretty solid from start to finish, but you've gotta see this band live because that's where they come through.
