Description

This is a beautiful handwoven shoulderbag made of sheep wool featuring mainly natural colours (cream and shades of brown).

The bag has a zipper and is lined. It features a small interior pocket.

Handmade in the green mountains of Junin, Peru.

Artist: Faustino Maldonado.

Technique: Handwoven on an Andean loom

About the artist:

Faustino Maldonado is one of the best known weavers in Junin. I have known him for several years but only in my last trip there in January 2009 I decided to get some bags from him to try out in my eBay shop. Like most weavers, he comes from a family of weavers, his father and grandfather were weavers, he learnt from them and now he teaches young weavers his art. He has a very spacious workshop where all the huge looms and visitors can fit. His wife and daughter help in the workshop and in the crafts shop they have. Faustino and his pupils weave rugs which are a bit different from the Ayacucho art rugs, the designs here are more geometrical and the rugs are thicker, and they are absolutely beautiful!. They also weave runners, cushion covers, handbags, shoulderbags, backpacks, ponchos, vests and blankets, everything is made of sheep wool. Visiting his workshop is like being in an amusement park, you can wonder around checking out the textiles and the weavers. Next time I go to Junin, I will get some rugs from him, they are again, beautiful!.
