dornier do 335 “Pfeil” by heinz nowarra, ed mloney and uwe feist an excellent, now out-of-print, technical monograph on the most unusual aircraft to come out of the Second World War This out-of-print 1966 book* describes one of the fastest propeller-driven fighters of the Second World War. Designed by Claudius Dornier to specifications set by the German Air Ministry in 1942, it incorporated a radical push-pull twin-propeller, twin-engine concept which Dornier had patented in 1937. Foot-dragging at the ministry was largely responsible for the construction and testing delays which plagued the prototype Do-335. Not until the fall of 1944 were 10 aircraft placed in operational service (one of which was spotted by French ace Pierre Closterman, who mentions it in his book). This excellently researched work details the numerous variations on the original Do 335 theme, from a two-seater night fighter version to the A-4 high-speed recce aircraft. *) We are aware that Schiffer published another book on this aircraft by the same author in 1989. We are unable to compare the contents of the two books, but believe “out-of-print” definitely applies to this 1966 original edition that we are auctioning. First edition, published by Aero Publishers of Stiff pictorial paperback, 11 by 7 1/2 inches, approx. 50 extra-heavy pages. With numerous b/w plates, 4 color plates of profile views and many rare historical photographs and cut-away drawings. Condition: a one-owner, well-cared for book, with few traces of use, mainly light rubbing and chipping on the the spine (former owner tipped-in a vintage photograph of an airfield sown in the book). Otherwise a good-as-new copy; no inscriptions, underlining, tears or stains. |
