| This listing represents a must have for the serious, WWII US GI Helmet Collector. Here you have one of the fabled Model 1936 Pearl Harbor style Kelly Helmet. The helmet is complete with thickly pebbled combat paint, canvas chinstrap and leather liner. The helmet is stamped, also. It is a real delight to offer this pre-WWII to early WWII GI Combat Helmet. It is in outstanding condition.
As noted in the reference book, GI, Government Issue, A Collector’s Guide to the European Theater Volume I, the Kelly helmet represents modifications made in 1936 to the M-1917A1. According to GI, the helmet was upgraded with a leather liner and buckled webbed chinstrap. Up to this point, our GIs, Marines, and Sailors wore the venerable World War I helmets. When war broke out, many were still using pre-Kelly helmets. The helmet has very thickly pebbled combat paint. The OD paint was mixed with sand to obtain the desired look. The finish is the original paint job. There are no dents or gouges. The rim is firmly in place. Under the brim the helmet appears to be stamped HS 158. I can make out the H and the numbers clearly. There are flexible bales with a sewn on, khaki canvas chinstrap. The buckle and hook are brass. The chinstrap is nicely intact. The leather liner consisting of four large tongues and the original tie are in place. The leather is in good shape; however, it shows wear and could use leather conditioner to soften it up. The padded crown is in place. The 1936 modified M1917A1 Kelly Helmets found their way into early WWII as war found as our country was woefully unprepared for global war on two fronts. This style helmet would have been worn at Pearl Harbor, on Navy Vessels, and in the Philippines, Guam, Java and Wake Island early in the war. Also, GIs who had already deployed to both Australia and England before our direct involvement in World War II would have been carrying this helmet. I believe the Kelly Helmets were still in combat as late as mid-1942 as the Armed Forces tried to get out the new M1 Fixed Bale Helmets to our servicemen and women. This Kelly Helmet is beautifully preserved, complete, and is approximately seventy-two years old. It would look terrific worn or in a display. Here is your chance to complete your helmet collection and own a rare, real piece of history. I have included a photograph from page 64 of the reference book, GI, Government Issue, A Collector’s Guide to the European Theater (Volume I) depicting this exact same style combat helmet. This complete WWII GI 1936 Pearl Harbor Style Kelly Helmet with pebbled OD combat finish, complete intact liner first model canvas chinstrap and maker stamped in outstanding condition would make a terrific addition, upgrade and/or addition to a WWII GI or Uniform collection. It also would be perfect for re-enactors, your display, museums, and for educational and theatrical presentations. I am listing a number of caps, uniform items, field gear, insignia, etc., this week. I have enjoyed interacting with buyers from four continents and dozens of countries. Many have been veterans, active duty GIs, home front family members in our war, authors, artists, teachers, museum curators, etc. You are encouraged to email with questions. I will try my best to answer all those that ar e received by Friday. (I am not always available on weekends when the items close.) If you perceive a discrepancy between the photos and description you should bring this to my attention for clarification before you bid. When bidding, consider what the item is worth and what you can afford. A winning bid represents a legal and binding contract.
All winning bidders are required to provide contact information within three business days of the listing’s conclusion. This means I need your full name and shipping address to validate you as the winning bidder. It is also a basic courtesy that is appreciated. Finally, recognize that most of these items are 64+ years old and typically will show some manifestation of age, time, removal of insignia (on uniform items), nips, etc that I may not catch. I am not infallible but work hard at offering comprehensive descriptions supported by photographs. I also can not guarantee that caps and uniform components will fit you so bid on them first as an artifact. I believe communication is the key to successful Ebay transactions. Thank You. |
