Walker Cherub Mk III patent log. Serial no. on log recorder AG4511. In original cedar case, the case is in only average to roughish condition but quite easily repairable. One rotor only, (came with 2, lost the other to a shark many years ago) with original line, flywheel, and a few spare lenses etc. Line rotted through from flywheel to joining hook, all parts still present, including complete trailing line (rare). Complete with taffrail bracket and original instructions on the inside of the box lid. I last used this log around 25 years ago, it was originally owned the Adelaide Steamship Company, and probably from the 1940's or maybe older. (This instrument is a recorder for determining distance travelled and thus ship’s speed. It is made of brass with a ceramic dial, with the main scale marked from 0 to 100 miles and two inset dials marked from 0 to 1000 miles and 0 to 1 mile. It has a fixing plate, on which it can turn, with which it would have been attached to a suitable part of the ship, typically the taffrail, the rail at the stern of a ship. As a result, this type of log was often called a taffrail log. The recorder was have been connected to the rotor that was towed behind the ship. The revolutions of the rotor registered on the indicator, thus measuring the distance travelled. For this model, 900 revolutions of the rotor registered as 1 nautical mile. Thomas Ferdinand Walker (1837–1921) first patented the Cherub log in 1878 (no. 4369). It was one of the first logs in which the recorder was placed on board the ship rather than being part of the rotor. The Cherub Mark III series proved to be very successful and was produced in considerable numbers between 1930 and 1994.I have not shined this one up in many years - it is grubby but well oiled and the rotor appears unused. The boxed set weighs about 10kg. Local pickup, or I will assist buyer with transport arrangements - I would not like to see it posted. Domestic or International courier at buyers cost might work - I will pack it appropriately if required. Cash or bank cheque upon pickup, or bank deposit to my account - ask.
