It was a treat to personally watch Walt Dette tie this fly for me.

In June of 1975, I visited the Darbee’s and the Dette’s, in the New York Catskill Mountains.  Two days were spent watching Walt,

Winnie, and Mary Dette, tie flies, and they gave me important tying instructions, as they created their flies.  Walt sat down and tied this fly,

for me to take back to Oregon as an instructional piece, to try to replicate his style.

I went back to the Catskills a couple of years ago, and visited Mary Dette  She is still tying flies, and following in her parent’s footsteps,

as the last, great, Catskill fly tyers.  Here is a fine example of Walt’s craftsmanhip.
