A HARDY, NITROGEN FIXING SHRUB WITH DELIGHTFUL, PROFUSE, PINK TO PURPLE PEA FLOWERS
GENUS CERCIS OCCIDENTALIS

Cercis occidentalis, commonly known as Western Redbud, is a deciduous (evergreen in warm temperate and warmer climates) shrub or small tree growing to a maximum of perhaps 3 metres in height. It is native to the west coast of the USA extending inland as far as Utah and is found naturally on dry slopes near springs or watercourses to a height of 1500 metres.

Western redbud can be trained and grown as either a single trunked or multi-trunked plant Bark is Grey. Leaves are dark green, heart-shaped and in cooler climates emerge in spring after flowers. Flowers are produced in the spring and are profuse, small, pea-shaped, in this instance lavender and appear on bare wood, normally before new spring leaves. Flowers are followed by brown bean pods. At the cooler end of its growth range it provides a delightful autumn colour change. It is attractive to both birds and butterflies.

This is a nitrogen fixing plant and both the leaves, flowers and fruit are edible. Native Americans used the twigs from this shrub for weavinfg and extracted a pink dye from the flowers. It makes an excellent potted specimen or patio plant and an attractive flowering bonsai.

Western Redbud is suitable for a range of climates (USDA zones 8 to 10) and although young seedlings require protection from frost once established it is frost resistant and hardy to about -7 C.

Cercis occidentalis is a low maintenance plant that can be pruned to shape and can be sited in full sun to part shade. Once established it is drought tolerant and can take a range of well-drained soils.

Propagation is straight-forward with scarified seed.

This auction is for 30 seed. Item shipped by ordinary mail upon receipt of clear funds. Postage cost of 60 cents. ***Save 50% postage & handling on additional lots that are combined for shipment.

We will be adding more to our range of auctions in the near future so please be sure to keep an eye open.

As always our seed is fresh & professionally cleaned to give you the very best germination rate.

Feel free to email us with any queries.

Happy bidding.
