Pre 1865 12"Bronze Musical handbell with a fantastic pedigree.
Now with Australia Wide Free Reg'd Postage.
Mears of London, The Whitechapel Bell Foundry
The oldest still operating Manufacturing firm in England. They are in the Guinness book of Records.
Makers of the Original Liberty Bell, Bells of St Paul's and Big Ben +++++++ a huge list of others. for many uses, Churches, Ships, Clocks and Musical.
This bell is a large 12" tuned Musical Bell, it has no clapper and was played by being struck by a soft ball mallet externally. It is thin walled and has been tuned to a specific note "A" I think, I am no music expert and this is a friends opinion only. The leather strap at the top would once have been branded with the Note of the bell.
It's large, 12 " in diameter and about the same in height, is in great unrestored condition. One side is more tarnished than the other, where it was stuck? no bruising, just more tarnish. It is caped by a leather branded Mears London. The Mears family owned the Whitechapel bell Foundry up until 1865 so it pre dates this year.
A new 12" musical bell from this company costs something like 800 pounds Stirling and a tuned set is up to about 17,000 pounds.
