The Jolly Gnomes Annual 1951 – Woman’s Illustrated magazine Gnomes Club. This is a decent example of a very scarce book that was ‘issued from the offices of Woman’s Illustrated magazine – The Fleetway House, Farringdon Street, London E.C.4 at the end of 1950. It is the Jolly Gnomes Annual – a picture and story book for children illustrated by Ern Shaw. The Jolly Gnomes appeared on their own page at the back of Woman’s Illustrated throughout the late 1940s and the 1950s. I once found a badge that was worn by a member of their Club, and the club emblem is shown on the back cover of this annual, although I am not sure if this book was on general sale or if it was only available to club members. Either way, I guess it was not very popular as it is the first example I have ever seen in many years of searching for this sort of item. The book measures 9½” x 7” and contains 80 pages of illustrated stories and games / puzzles etc. It looks to be aimed at children of around 7-10 years old. There are a couple of minor faults to mention. The main one being a 2” rip by the spine on the back cover, at the bottom. Also, the bottom inch and top half-inch of the paper spine is missing, but other than that it is complete. The Dot-to-Dot puzzle on page 77 has been neatly completed but no other of the many puzzle pages have been written on. There is an inscription (dated 1950) on the This Book Belongs To panel. There is a very small rip on each of the covers and it shows slight signs of handling, but in all it is in very good clean and complete condition and will go well in various types of collection until a perfect example turns up.

ALL of my AUCTION ITEMS are now listed with FREE POSTAGE IN THE UK.
(They are not actually free to post of course! I have to pay to post them but for UK bidders the price you see at the end of the auction is the total price you pay. Foreign postal rates are clearly stated).
PACKAGING. Please note that all of my items are well-packed in thick card or in boxes, and then wrapped in good quality brown paper. I do not make any separate charge for packaging materials - everything is included in the final price. Many of my feedback comments mention my good packaging and I will of course continue to meet my own standards.
POSTAL DISPUTE - If you are at all worried about the effects of the postal dispute and would like me to delay posting your item please let me know and I will be happy to send it when you want me to. Two years ago, when there were a series of one and two-day strikes the effects were minimal, and although the odd item took a couple of days extra to arrive, I was relieved and am happy to report that everything was perfectly safe at all times. Items being mailed abroad did not seem to be affected at all.
