You are bidding on a collection of 32 short films that were made by the US Government during World War II. Total run time is almost 7 hours, all on 4 DVDs.  The purpose of these films was to install confidence in the US war effort, and to encourage citizen participation in the war effort.

These films are in the Public Domain, and have been verified as such by the Library of Congress.  A copy of the public domain certificate is located at:

 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/publicdomain/

Films

(approx. 410 minutes total run time)

Campus On The March (1942): U.S. colleges and universities retool to assist war effort. (18:07)

All Out For Victory (1943): Contributions of handicapped and disabled workers to World War II industrial production. (20:16)

Close Harmony ( 1942): Discussion on the need for unity between labor and management as the U.S. mobilizes for World War II. (10:35)

Troop Train (1943): Evocative World War II-era film following a troop train: the coordination of effort; its staging and assembly of cars, cargo and passengers; its heavily guarded journey through the American countryside; and the food, sleep, exercise, training, drilling and recreation of its soldier-passengers. (13:15)

Conquer By The Clock (1943): Encourages American workers to make the best possible use of their time in a war where industrial production and combat are synchronized on an international level. (10:40)

Food For Fighters (1943): Importance of nutrition in wartime. (9:50)

Arm Behind The Army (1942): Contrasts America's Free Industrial Labor Force with the subjugation of laborers in countries overtaken by Axis powers. Stresses the fact that World War II is the war of industry and labor. (10:21)

Safeguarding Military Information (1941): Stresses the importance of secrecy on the part of military personnel and workers engaged in defense activities, and shows the results of careless talk. Ship explosion, sabotage, and disastrous events result from thoughtless revelation of information to enemy. (10:21)

When Work Is Done (1943) : War plant workers flood the town of Sylacauga, Alabama, and the town constructs facilities and organizes activities to make them feel welcome. Excellent, idealized view of homefront life in a World War II factory town. (8:55)

Mr. & Mrs. America (1945) : Mobilizing citizens on the homefront in World War II. (12:44)

Supervising Women Workers (1944) : Management addresses the special problems of women workers with concern and a heavy dose of sexism. (10:10)

Three Cities (1943) : In segment one, A pile of families move into wartime housing, only to realize the school is not built yet. Segment 2 details people living in trailer parks because of the war. Segment 3 is a typical rah of how people use Sunday, their day of rest of course, to be trained off to do hard labor for the army. (10:08)

Victory Is Our Business (1942) : Patriotic motivational film for World War II industrial workers. (10:09)

Ring of Steel (1942) : This is a fine documentary done in the early days of WWII. Spencer Tracy, who was a veteran of WWI, narrated the film in his usual effective manner. The short was done in February, 1942 just after Tracy filmed Woman of the Year and Tortilla Flat. (8:32)

Wartime Nutrition (1943) : Wartime work of public welfare agencies in the field of nutrition. (10:21)

The Town (1945) : Shows life during wartime in an American town (Madison, Indiana). Directed by Josef von Sternberg. (10:11)

Remember These Faces (1945) : Intense view of American soldiers in combat, produced to sell World War II bonds. (17:12)

Suggestion Box (1943) : How war plant workers made suggestions that resulted in efficiency and economy. (8:53)

These People (1944) : Frigidaire plant converts to military production during World War II. (15:08)

That Boy Joe (1944) : Temperance as an antidote to juvenile delinquency. (17:27)

Men & Jobs (1944) : How the U.S. government tried to match every person to a job during World War II. (8:35)

These Are The People (1944) : Workers of a Wisconsin town mobilize for World War II production. (15:24)

To The People of the United States (1944) : Public education film on combatting the epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases, especially syphilis, in World War II. (20:51)

My Japan (1945) : Complex and disturbing anti-Japanese propaganda film produced to spur the sale of U.S. war bonds. CONTENT ADVISORY: Explicit racism and extreme violence. (16:03)

As The Twig is Bent (1943) : On the problem of youth crime during World War II and the fear that America would lose a generation of children to delinquency. (10:49)

Every Minute Counts (1944) : Balancing work and family in a time of heightened mobilization. (10:13)

Freedom Comes High (1944) : A fast-paced drama about a young married couple, Steve and Ellen, who are divided by Steve's enlistment in the Navy during World War II. While entering enemy waters, Steve's ship is struck during battle. Steve's spirit appears as Ellen reads the last letter he wrote to her: "I am sure you'll understand that whatever I do for you and the baby is more important right now than anything else in the world. The value of these things can't be measured ordinary ways, but must be paid for in dollars and cents -- sometimes in lives. Freedom comes high. No matter what happens, I shall always be with you." These words console Ellen as she receives the telegram announcing his death. Vice Admiral John H. Towers, Commander Air Force Pacific Islands then appears to encourage the buying of war bonds ("You do your share, we'll do ours") to drive the Japanese troops from the sea and the air, so that then they will "be utterly doomed".  (12:29)

Highballing to Victory (1944) : Transportation in wartime. (10:48)

It Can't Last (1944) : World War II propaganda film aimed at the homefront, attempting to increase popular mobilization. (18:29)

It's Everybody's War (1945) : Plea for increased commitment by Americans to win the war. Narrated by Henry Fonda. (15:07)

A Letter From Bataan (1944) : In the jungles of Bataan, two American soldiers, unable to see enemy planes because of night blindness are hit by a Japanese bomb. Pete is killed outright, Johnny dies on the operating table, his last words, "I've got to write a letter." Johnny's "letter"- the one he was going to write- reaches home in America one morning as a neighbor is bragging of her hoard of groceries, as his kid brother skids his car around a corner on two wheels. Johnny's letter is a moving plea to the folks at home to see to it that other American soldiers have the things he and Pete lacked on Bataan, food so that they won't have night blindness and hunger cramps, guns and shells and planes so that they can fight. (13:51)

Manpower (1943) : The battle for industrial production in World War II. (8:32)
