The last decade of the nineteenth century is the mythic period in Australia’s literary history-the romantic years of galloping ballads and bush yarns, bohemianism and creative giants. Yet many  of Australia’s conceptions and misconceptions of itself have their basis in the literature of the 1890s.

This retrospective collection of 1890s writing brings together the work of more than thirty poets, storytellers and essayists. It is divided into six sections: writing in Australia, which includes and A.G. Stephens essay and Lawson’s bitter “ ‘Pursuing Literature in Australia’; city life, with its disillusionment and down-and outs; lyrical verse, including work from Christopher Brennan and John Shaw Neilson; nationalism, politics and society, brimming with sentiment, outrage and satire, the city or the bush?. Tracing the famous Lawson-Paterson debate, and finally up the country, with the classics of the period by “Steele Rudd”, Joseph Furphy, and Barbara Baynton, plus “The Man from Snowy River”, The Geebung Polo Club and The Drover’s Wife.

NN=Near New without wrapping, no marks-looks unread- almost new book-pages either white or near white-slightest of use-read once

EC= Excellent Condition – Light wear only-no writing or crease to pages-may have  light discoloration to pages/name or inscription in fly--Light cover crease/anything major will not be in this category

VG-maybe a name or bookseller stamp or other light marks with age including name or inscriptions/marks/light tanning on compressed ends/pages-Ex library; including all or some of above-otherwise fine.

GC=Good Condition –There is tanning to pages and age marks with some marks on book as above/and/or bookseller stamp and/or minor creasing and spine wear

FC=Fair Condition-book is a bit rough with annotations/creasing/foxing/spine wear but is a  readable copy–pages and spine tight
