chocolate vines are commercial fruits sold in japan and it is getting more popular. the fresh fruits have fragrant smell and sweet taste. the fruits skin is used for making dumplings and new shoots are also eaten as veggies, can be deep fried as tempura or marinated with spices. these seeds are the hybrid of two large fruit chocolate vines, the three leafed chocolate vine akebia trifoliata (third photo ) and taiwan chocolate vine akebia longeracemosa (second photo), which may have never been done before. the three leafed one is the commercial species grown in japan and the taiwan chocolate vine is the rarest akebia which is only found in taiwan. the new hybrid is expected to have larger fruits and better taste. chocolate vine prefers sunny position and can be trimmed as bonsai or grown along the fences or trellis. it can be moderate drought resistant when established and very cold hardy.
