Xanthorrhoea johnsonii (Queensland Grass Tree, Black Boy)
About the Grass Tree
There are approximately 30 Australian species of grass trees found across the country. They are slow growing, remarkable plants that can live for up to 600 years. They occur naturally in habitats ranging from dry rocky hillsides to wet sandy loams. Often they are the first plants to regenerate after bush fires and burn offs. Grass Trees grow to a height of over 4 metres and often have branches. The flowering stalk grows at a rate of 2-3cm a day, reaching a height of over 3 metres. Flowers normally appear in spring or after a fire and are white to cream on long spikes. Flowers are very attractive to birds, bees and butterflies. Grass trees are native to frost prone areas and can survive in areas with temperatures up to -10.
Growing the Grass Tree
An open sunny situation with well drained soil is best. Even as young plants, Grass Trees are very tough and can handle drought & full sun. If the ground is clay, plant above ground level in a raised mound or bed to prevent rot. If soil is sandy, add potting mix. Water once or twice a week during dry season, to develop the roots, until they are established. After this they will do their own thing and survive on natural rainfall. Add a slow release fertilizer (native plants, low Phos) every so often (as specified by manufacturer) to stimulate foliage and root growth. Remove fallen leaves and twigs from the foliage to prevent fungal infection. Trim 1/3 to ½ of the foliage back if it is brown of dry.
Grass Trees grow very well in containers. The Grass trees makes a great feature that requires very little water and maintenance. Many local councils have planted these in nature strips and along roads, as they are so low-maintenance.
You are bidding on 5 small plants, similar to the plant shown in the picture underneath the picture of the mature palm. They range between 15-25cm tall & are sent in 45mm jiffy pots, which can be planted straight into their new pot to reduce transplant stress.
