This book is a moving biography of a great traditional painter and elder of the Gunwinggu tribe.  it also tells of the extraordinary dedication of Yirawala's faithful friend Sandra Holmes, a woman who has spent her life trying to bridge the gap betwen black and white Australia.

The ceremonial paintings of Yirawala - ceremony leader, law carrier, medicine man and healer of the Gunwinggu tribe - were avidly sought by collectors and museums all over the world.  This book contains for the first time, colour plates and explanations of the entire ceremonial series of 139 paintings collected by Sandra Holmes (now in the collection of the Australian National Gallery, Canberra).

The book also records Yirawala's fight to protect his tribal lands.  he was the keeper of the sacred Gunwinggu caves and guardian of sacred symbols, the life forces of his clan.

160 pages, complete with b/w photos along with the 139 colour plates.
