Your Call Is Important to Us: The Truth about Bullshit by Laura Penny. Paperback book published by Scribe 2005, 278 pages. No matter how cynical you become, it’s never enough to keep up. — Lilly Tomlin. We live in an era of unprecedented bullshit production. The more polite among you might call it poppycock or balderdash or claptrap, but the concept remains the same. Never in history have so many people uttered statements that they know to be untrue. While bullshit is not new, more money, more media, and more marketing spin have led to a bullshit pandemic. Today, we are so used to exaggeration, clichés, euphemisms, and evasion we rarely notice them any more. Laura Penny is an honest and hilarious guide through the phoniness of advertising and public relations, the claptrap of big corporations, the gobbledygook of the media, and the poppycock of the service industry. Along the way, she takes aim at the major culprits and the insidious ways they distort reality. Finally, with devastating precision, she demonstrates how our “all-you-can-eat buffet of phoniness” not only alienates us from each other but degrades public discourse, breeds apathy, and makes us just plain stupid. As scathing as Michael Moore, as incisive as Naomi Klein, and as funny as Al Franken, Your Call Is Important to Us is a manifesto for anyone who’s sick and tired of the twenty-first century’s tidal wave of globalised, super-sized, consumerised bullshit. It’s an island of clarity in an ocean of ordure. This book is in very good condition. The cover is in very good condition.
