Vintage Royal Delft Wall Plate Westraven JANUARY

It is my pleasure to offer you this vintage Royal Delft Month Wall Plate of MAY produced by Westraven IN Delft Holland.

Westraven was established in 1661 as a tile factory near Utrecht in the heart of The Netherlands (The medieval 7 Provinces). There was a high demand of roof tiles because of the many fires in town and a new law requiring roofs had to be covered with tiles in stead of wood. Many years later the factory adds floor and wall tiles to its collection.

After World War II Westraven wat converted into a subsidiary of The Royal Porceleyne Fles in Delft. Besides its own collection, Westraven started producing appliques, candy dishes, serving trays and plates. Where Royal Delft items all are fully handpainted, Westraven articles are screen-printed: the decoration is glued onto the product by means of a transfer. During the firing process it melts into the glaze.

In 1994 Westraven moved to Delft, where its production was integrated into the production of Royal Delft.

These wall plates have been designed by Adolph le Compte (1850-1921). He was a gifted artist, designer and teacher and was a professor at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. In 1877 Joost Thooft convinced him to become the Artistic Director of his Porceleyne Fles and from then Le Compte was responsible for most of the designs of "The Fles". His good relationship with many famous Dutch painters of "de Haagse School" allowed for the reproduction of many of their paintings on the Porceleyne Fles wall plates in that period.

As a tribute to Le Comte a set of plates was issued by Westraven in a one time limited edition. Part of this edition was issued by Hamilton Collections "The Months of the Year".

Each month shows a Dutch scenery typical for that part of the year. All are executed in the traditional Delft blue. Each plate carries the name of the month it depicts in Dutch on the obverse.

THIS is the JANUARY PLATE of the set.

Marked at the the underside with the Westraven factory logo.

AGE: 1970-1980

DIMENSIONS: Diameter is 9¾ inches (25 cm).

CONDITION: EXCELLENT. This set is in PERFECT condition. No cracks, chips, flakes or any other flaws. A real treasure for any TOP QUALITY Delft Collection.

The white spots on some pictures are the reflection of my photo lights.
