From the Designer - Tony Clayton: Well Spotted t-shirts are born out of parental joy, expectation & well, frustration!
Somehow it helps get me through to describe some of their idiosyncratic ways on a t-shirt. And Well Spotted t-shirts are made out of a need to keep all of my production as locally focused as possible ...so I travel 12km to Bankstown to have my t-shirts made and I print them all myself, yes with my own hands!
If all the big brands insist on manufacturing off-shore then the day will come when there will be no one left in Australia that can make a t-shirt (or any clothing at all) & we don't want that ...do we!
Tony makes t-shirts. He has been for most of his life. It all started back in Mrs Rickersley’s third grade art class. One minute he was cutting out paper stencils and the next minute there was a little red apple on his little yellow t-shirt!
Hundreds of little red apples later he set up a business selling t-shirts with more complicated prints on them at Sydney’s Paddington markets. As the nineties (and his thirties) loomed large, the need for security led him to the spiritual home of the Australian t-shirt Mambo. Over the following decade, from the “Farting Dog” to the “Great Australian Beer Tree”, he gained the understanding of the power of the t-shirt. From 1989-2001 Tony enjoyed the best years of Mambo as Print Manager.
In 2002 Tony got serious about fashion at Lee Mathews doing equal parts print design & production.
In 2003 Tony became a dad and that's when he started the baby label well spotted.
Today Tony lives in Sydney. Making t-shirts. Having babies.
Little t-shirts that are a bit clever, a bit witty, a bit odd.
well spotted. Hand printing babies’ t-shirts since….well, since the birth of his first baby.
