You can make calls, send text messages and listen to the radio. This mobile also has a few tricks up its sleeve. The handset is marketed by Foresight Technologies, a local company that also sells LCD TVs. Design And FeaturesFor the uninitiated, the CP09 resembles a calculator more than a mobile phone. It has an eye-popping numeric keypad and in contrast a tiny 1.6-inch monochrome screen in orange backlit. We like the generously sized buttons which offer good tactile feedback, but can't say the same for the slippery chassis. This makes it difficult to toggle the dedicated FM radio, key lock and torchlight switches on the sides as well as remove the battery cover.Colored markings on the slider keys with embossed symbols would also have been great, instead of having these blend in with the color of the handset. The build quality is surprisingly decent for this budget phone. You can see the size of the CP09 in our hands in the picture on the right. On the front, the "*" and "#" buttons are accompanied with the graphics of a girl and boy, respectively. These work like your typical speed dials, except that they are supposed to help the elderly remember which number has been preprogrammed for speed dial. For example, pressing the # (male) button would initiate a call to the son. Around
the back is a big orange SOS button which is slightly recessed into the
chassis to prevent accidental presses. When activated, it sends out a
pre-configured SMS (for example: I'm in trouble, please call me!) to
the emergency contact list, while emitting a shrieking siren at the
same time. It will also automatically call the list starting with the
first number, followed by the second, third and fourth if any of the
receiving parties didn't pick up the call. Once the call is connected,
the CP09 goes into loudspeaker mode. The concept is brilliant except
for one flaw. If anyone in the emergency contact list has voicemail
enabled, the CP09 would recognize that as a successful call even though
it has reached an audio recording machine.
This simplifies the process for the elderly user. Along the bottom edge of the CP09 is a 3.5mm audio jack for plugging in to the bundled headset. The phonebook can store up to 100 contacts and languages supported include English and Simplified Chinese. Silent mode can be activated only via the onscreen menus, so that's a chore.
