ship's tankard

This is a vintage tankard marked with an enamel badge S. S. Ixion. It has a glass base etched with the golfing term 'The 19th Hole'.

Ixion SS was a British Cargo Steamer built in 1912 and of 10,263 tons. She was owned by HOLT & CO , ALFRED CHINA MUTUAL STEAM NAVIGATION CO LTD. On the 7th May 1941 when on route from GLASGOW for NEW YORK in Convoy OB-318 and carrying a cargo of 2,900 tons of general cargo, including whiskey, 900 bags of mail, some diplomatic mail, she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-94. All of the 105 crew were saved.

Condition:  Very good apart from a small dent to the base rim.
