EVENING GLOW IN SPRING - TOSHOGU SHRINE  UENO  1948

Unframed print on medium hand made Japanese washi paper, size Image: 240x365, Paper: 260x390. Excellent impression, good bleed through colour, verso, no creases, folds, rips or tears, very good colour, clean and loose.  Undistributed, acquired directly from publisher, Watanabe.  Brushed Hasui seal BR, Red Hasui, below. Red Watanabe Heisei seal BR margin indicates this is a genuine impression from the block of 1948, produced during the Heisei period. (post 1989).  This image shows the Toshogu Shrine surrounded by cherry blossom in springtime at Ueno Park. The vibrancy of early evening is demonstrated by the use of excellent sky colour graduation (Bokashi).

Kawase Hasui  1883-1957

Born Tokyo.  His childhood was associated with theatre, he did set designs in the 1940's and 50's for Kabuki. From early developement he was captivated by landscapes, snow, rain and mist.  He studied western style art in 1907, especially landscapes. he was a pupil of Kaburogi Kiyokata who gave him the art name of Hasui.  Hasui worked extensively designing landscape prints for publisher Watanabe from approx: 1920. He was always extolling the block carvers and printers to achieve newer and more subtle effects, especially with snow.  After WW11, his work was used by the Japaneses government to represent the softer side of Japanese life in tourist publications.  Hasui produced over 600 landscapes images in his lifetime to  become recognised as the best landscape artist since Hiroshige.
