Archiduche D'Austriche, Tyrol, Salzbourg et Styrie - Archduchy of Austria, Tyrol, Salzburg and Styria

This original hand-coloured steel-plate engraved map is of the Archduchy of Austria, Tryol, Salzburg and Styria - states of the Austrian Empire 1856, by Malte-Brun. It is from "Geographie Universelle de Malte-Brun Atlas ....", by A.H. Dufour, published 1856, by Gustave Barba, Paris. Dufour re-drew the maps based on geography & maps of Malte-Brun, so they are essentially Malte-Brun maps, but Dufour has drawn some of his maps on a much larger scale, thus including allowing a lot more detail in certain areas. The map image measures 31cm by 25cm (12.3in by 10in), with 2cm+ margins, Blank on the Reserve, and printed on thick study paper.

This map shows the central states of the Austrian Habsburg Empire - Upper &Lower Austria, Tryol, Stryia, and Salzburg 1856, as well as neighbouring parts of Hungary, Croatia, Illyria (Slovenia), Bohemia & Moravia (Czech), Swizterland northern Italy and southern Germany. The maps shows the four states in different colours, as well as the geography of the neighbouring states. A large stretch of the Danube river is shown, ending at Presburg (today's Bratislava in Slovakia), and showing Vienna is detail, with the outline of the city shown. Some of the other cities shown include: Linz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Zagreb (Agram), Bruck, as well as the Alps. Is very rare to find such detailed maps of this region, from the mid-1800's, especially in such great detail.

The map is fully coloured, and has a very detailed representation of the geography, including the rivers, lakes, mountains, coastlines and islands, as well as the major towns/cities, and road & rail links (as were at the time). The detail of the geography is quite amazing, especially where there are lots of mountains/rivers/coastlines - these maps are amongst the most detailed maps you will find from the mid-1800's. Condition Rating System: Near Perfect/Very Good/Good/Fair/Poor. Signs of Use = slight marks/dirtiness from people holding map (Very Minor/Minor/Mild/Fair/Heavy). Ghosting: when the one side of the folded map has imprinted onto the other side (usually the outlines)
