This Genuine Rare Original First Edition Antique Japanese Woodblock Print Shows the Wife of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi and is from his Historic Series the Wives of the Tokugawa Shoguns who Ruled Japan from the Early 1600s until the Beginning of the Meiji Era. It Bears the Signature Toyohara Kunichika Hitsu with the Red Toshidama Seal Below in the Lower Right of the Scene and Kunichika's Address in the Left Margin as was required by Japanese Law at the Time.

This Extremely Rare, Authentic First Edition Excellently Coloured Antique Kunichika Woodblock Print Measures 35.8m x 24cm (1ft 2.2 inches x 9.5 inches) Has Some Intriguing Blind Printing which Displays the Intricate Patterning of the Shogun's Wife's Rich Kimono and Some Silver Mica High Lights, is Hand Printed on Medium Weight Washi, Hand Made Japanese Mulberry Bark Paper with Strong Ink Bleed Through to the Reverse Side and is in Very Good Condition for its Age with a couple of minor signs of the years including two tiny tears in the right margin and some remains of old backing material on the reverse side but this has helped to conserve the woodblock in such good condition. ABOUT THE ARTIST.

KUNICHIKA, TOYOHARA Was Born in Tokyo in 1835 and Lived until 1900. At Eleven years of Age he entered the School of Chikanobu and about 3 years Later Became a Student of Kunisada. He enjoyed a rather Bohemian Lifestyle and Unlike Many Artists of the Time He Worked Exactly to His Own Tastes. During His Eccentric Life he Produced a Spectacular Array of Unique and Original Work Based Mainly on Kabuki Theatre. He is One of the Most Highly Collected Ukiyo-e Artists.
