BROKEN JOURNEY & IN A SPIRIT OF PROGRESS
Six different state railways, all running on different gauges made freight handling at borders a circus. It took World War II to force Australia to recognize its break of the gauge problems. This story deals with the way each of the six British colonies developed railway systems all of their own. Australia's government controlled railways have fought a losing battle against airlines and road freighters for the past 50 years, but in 1937 The Spirit Of Progress was at the vanguard. In 1980 the XPT made an impact but what does the future hold? What sort of railway does Australia need? Is there the political will to build the VFT? (54 minutes)
MISSING LINKS & TETHERED TO THE WORLD
In Australia the coming trains signalled an end to social and economic isolation and the beginning of a farming revolution. The very early tracks were called “Pioneer Lines”. For many outback towns they were the first reliable communications link with the outside world. Exports boomed and Australia prospered as the iron horse brought an ever increasing range of tonnage of primary products down to the sea. Changing times have seen many railways and particularly "Pioneer Lines" outlive their purpose. Although, happily there are exceptions to every rule. This story looks at how the bush became tethered to the world. It also features some of Australia’s best loved railways. (54 minutes)
RAILWAYS OF YESTERYEAR
Live Ted Egan's dream as he rides on as many of the old timers as he can. The train journeys include the famous Zig Zag in the Blue Mountains of NSW, the Puffing Billy as it travels through Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges. At Victor Harbour in South Australia we join Ted on the horse tramway that travels from inland Goolwa to the sea. Of course no train enthusiast would be satisfied without riding on The Ghan and the famous Pichi Richi railway in the Finders Ranges, even industrial locomotives near Newcastle are included in this dream come true. (51 minutes)
LIVING IN THE NEVER NEVER
Australia's trans-continental railways is one of the world's longest hauls, crossing the continent from coast to coast. Cook is a tiny railway town set dead in the middle of the Nullarbor Plain. Cook like dozens of railway settlements was created during the construction of the railway line, which began in 1912 and took 5 years to complete. In this film we will meet the real people of this small community, spend time with Merv Gould the stationmaster and his wife Sylvia. Spend time exploring the desert with the local school children, ending up south of Cook at the head of The Great Australian Bight swimming at the breeding ground of the Southern Wright Whale. (50 minutes)
