Vintage 1974 MXR Dyna Comp FX Pedal Script Logo Bud Box

Up for auction is a vintage 1974 Script Logo MXR Dyna Comp guitar FX pedal.  This is one of the first, if not the first, compact compressors for guitar/bass often revered as the "holy grail of compressors".  The pots date the pedal to later half of 1974 (Output - 1377451, Sensitivity - 1377433), serial # is 203775.  This particular Dyna Comp is one of the earliest versions in the highly collectable "Bud Box" enclosure.  These lighter weight enclosures were only used for the first couple years of production until MXR switched over to a slightly heavier enclosure around '75-'76.  Notice that the outside of the back plate does not have the MXR logo stamped in the bottom right corner and that the inside of the back plate has "Bud CU 124 Willoughby Ohio" stamped on the inside.  It's hard to get a picture, but the Bud logo is also stamped on the inside of the enclosure between the input/output jacks as well.  The pedal is all original (no modifications to the circuit or enclosure) and features a silk screened circuit board, all carbon composition resistors, the famed "metal can style" ic/op-amp, and the original gray vinyl battery snap.  The pedal sounds great (35 years and still going strong!!!), is very musical, and has all the "mojo" that you would expect from a vintage pedal.

MXR Dyna Comp What do Dave Gilmour, The Edge and Pete Townsend all have in common? Old MXR Dyna Comps and BIG FAT TONE. Effect pedal collectors will be mopping up their drool at the sight of this one. This is without doubt the most collectable compressor in the world - an original script logo 1974 MXR Dyna Comp. How good is it? Well take a look at that big stupid grin on my face. Oh yeh…. it's that good.

The humble compressor is quite a misunderstood and subsequently underestimated effect. Think of it like this. A good overdrive pedal does for your dirty sound what a good compressor will do for your clean sound, and they don't come any better than this. Not surprisingly, the first genre of musicians to catch on to the value of this pedal was the Tele toting country boys like Reggie Young and Jerry Reed who have used the Dyna Comp on literally hundreds of albums. A young guitarist by the name of Dave Gilmour heard the amazing tone coming from these Nashville players and since 76' Gilmour has always had one in his rig. The MXR Dyna Comp can be heard on nearly every guitar solo that Gilmour recorded in the early years of Pink Floyd. You don't need any more reason than that. Go and get one. The key to getting those big tones from the Dyna Comp is the sensitivity control. This takes all of the less dynamic sounds such as low output strings or the 'pop' of your pick and raises them to the same level as everything else. The Dyna Comp is so amazing because it does this without losing top end so you end up with incredible clarity and infinite sustain. With the sensitivity level around 2 o'clock your big country style bends all of a sudden make sense and the notes simply hang in the air as long as your fingers are on the strings. What I love so much about this pedal is that it opens up a side of your playing that most of us reserve for our acoustic guitars. When was the last time you played an amplified solo without some sort of overdrive thrown in? And when you combine this pedal with overdrive, chorus or some delay the results can be truly inspiring.
