Description
Walala Tjapaltjarri
A STUNNINGLY POWERFUL COMPACT INVESTMENT PIECE FROM
A MODERN DAY GREAT ~ AT A MATCHING COMPACT PRICE!
TITLE: Tingari Dreaming
FRAMABLE PAINTED AREA: approx 900 x 600 mm [plus border for framing]
COMPLETED: 2009
MATERIALS: Artist acrylic paint on pre-primed quality canvas
THE STORY: Walala paints designs associated with the sacred and secret ceremonies of the Tingari Cycle. These stories recount the ancient tales of the Tingari people, an important group of mythical elders who travelled over vast stretches of the country back in creation time, performing rituals and imparting their knowledge to young initiates.
THE PAINTING: A striking piece painted with Walala's natural geometric style that usually involves an intricate webbing of earthy colours and contrasting dots [in this case, deep red and yellow ochre rectangles with white dots] set against a black primed background. This strong unique style is reminiscent of the sand and body painting of the Western Desert people.
As Walala's painings are becoming serious collector’s items - therefore commanding substantial price tags in traditional galleries - this magnificent piece represents outstanding investment value or an affordable entry into the fascinating world of serious aboriginal art collecting. Needless to say, this powerful compact painting would also command attention and envy on any wall [either hung horizontally or vertically] it happened to grace.

THE ARTIST:
NAME: Walala Tjapaltjarri
BORN: c1961
REGION: Kiwirrkurra-Western Australia
LANGUAGE GROUP: Pintupi.
Walala Tjapaltjarri is a Pintupi man who was born in the early 1960s somewhere near Marua, east of Kiwirrkurra in the Gibson Desert. In 1984, Walala and his family arrived at the Kiwirrkura community after literally walking out of the Gibson Desert, where they had been leading the traditional life of the nomadic Pintupi people in the region near Wilkinkarra [Lake Mackay]. This was their first contact with European society. Their emergence from a region that was no longer thought to have any traditional owners still living a nomadic way of life, caused great national and international interest. Soon after, Walala, along with his two brothers, began to translate the traditional Tingari dreamings to canvas, gaining worldwide recognition. Walala is married to a Warlpiri woman and travels between his homeland of Kiwirrkura and his wife's country of Yuendumu, and Alice Springs.
PROVENANCE: A Certificate of Authenticity with a photo of Walala with his work that he has signed verso.
