Description
George Ward Tjungurrayi
A STUNNINGLY POWERFUL INVESTMENT PIECE
ON TOP QUALITY BELGIAN LINEN FROM ONE OF THE ALL-TIME COLLECTABLE GREATS!
TITLE: Tingari Dreaming
FRAMABLE PAINTED AREA: approx 600 x 600 mm [plus border for framing]
COMPLETED: 2009
MATERIALS: Artist acrylic paint on hand primed Belgian Linen
THE STORY: George paints designs associated with the sacred and secret ceremonies of the Tingari Cycle. These stories recount the ancient tales of the Tingari people, an important group of mythical elders who travelled over vast stretches of the country back in creation time, performing rituals and imparting their knowledge to young initiates.
THE PAINTING: A striking piece painted with George's natural raw, energetic style that usually involves an intricate webbing of darker colours and contrasting dots [in this case, an earthy dark red colour with white dots] on a black hand primed background, in a strong geometric style that is reminiscent of the sand and body painting of the Western Desert people. In this instance, the photos definitely do not do anything for this magnificent compact painting.
This painting represents an excellent affordable entry into the indigenous fine art collectors' world. As George's larger pieces can now fetch $30,000 - $40,000 in traditional art auctions, any of his paintings are destined to become serious collector’s items and therefore would be valuable assets in any future investment portfolio. Needless to say, this powerful painting would also command attention and envy on any wall that it happened to grace.
THE ARTIST:
NAME: George Ward Tjungurrayi
BORN: c1945
REGION: Kiwirrkurra-Western Australia and Walungurru (Kintore)-Northern Territory.
LANGUAGE GROUP: Pintupi.
George Ward Tjungurrayi commenced painting around 1976 for Papunya Tula Artists and is now one of the highest regarded senior Pintupi painters. Hailing from a strong artistic ancestry, he shares the same father as Willy Tjungurrayi and the late Yala Yala Gibbs.
George, who won the 2004 Wynne Prize for landscape painting, remains a quietly reserved Western Desert man. But now that he has become one of the nation's most admired and keenly collected artists, these reticent character traits can cause some logistical and promotional problems. Not being entirely comfortable with the English language makes him uneasy in big towns and cities - "I'm a bush man, me." Nevertheless, with his international recognition and popularity having risen to an exalted level, and his larger works now fetching tens of thousands of dollars at auction, he may just have to get used to some well-deserved exposure.
George is now regarded as one of our most collectable living artists - with most offerings keenly snapped up by serious collectors both here and overseas. His amazing works now feature extensively in many private and public prestigious collections all over the world including our own National Gallery in Canberra.
PROVENANCE: A Certificate of Authenticity with a photo of George with his work that he has signed verso [x].
