THE PAINTING: In this magnificent piece Gabriella has lovingly painted the Dreamtime story of the cluster of stars known as ‘The Seven Sisters’ or ‘Pleiades’, as taught to her by her mother and grandmother. Gabriella depicts the cloud formations in front of the Milky Way in the night sky. The seven concentric circles are the Seven Sisters and the lone star is Orion. As Gabriella’s paintings are now internationally recognised as collectables of the highest order, this large piece represents outstanding investment value – not to mention the stunning effect it would have when hung [any which way] on any wall.

THE STORY: Legend has it that as seven sisters were travelling across the country they discovered that they were being followed by an evil Tjakamarra man [Wati-Nyiru] who sought to seduce two of the younger sisters and take them as his own. The sisters banded together for protection, but were frightened and tried to hide. However, Wati-Nyiru was a master of disguise and too clever for them. The only way to escape was through a fire to the Milky Way where they became the seven stars of the Constellation ‘Taurus’ where they now rest safely to watch over all the women on earth. Wati-Nyiru also followed them into the heavens where he became the star ‘Orion’, but as he was destined to never get closer, he was no longer a threat to them.

THE ARTIST: Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi was born in 1967 at Mt Allan in the Northern territory and boasts an amazing artistic pedigree. She is a daughter of the late great Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri [one of his paintings sold for a record $2.4 mil in Sotheby’s ’07 auction!] and the older sister of Michelle, also an acclaimed artist. Gabriella has emerged from her famous father’s long shadow to become a highly regarded, internationally recognised artist in her own right, with a number of successful exhibitions. This extremely collectable artist is also currently represented in some major public and private collections around the world.

PROVENANCE: This painting is accompanied by a COA with a photo of Gabriella holding her painting that she has signed and titled verso.
