THE ARTIST: Born: c.1938 Place: Watulka - Western Australia Language Group: Pintupi Lives: Alice Springs
Ningura Napurrula was born c1938 in Watulka south of the Kiwirrkura community in West Australia and is now arguably one of our most collectable indigenous artists. Ningura was married to the late Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi, the internationally renowned artist and highly respected Pintupi elder. In the 1960’s Yala Yala and his family embarked on a long and arduous journey across the Western Desert, finally arriving in Papunya.
Yala Yala Gibbs was one of the original artists who pioneered the Papunya Tula Art movement in the early 1970’s. Over the years, Ningura observed the senior artists in Papunya working on large paintings and listened to them discussing the importance of the story layout and the meaning behind each piece. In the early1990’s, remembering the teachings of the old men, Ningura began producing her own stunning works – often singing the songs for each story as she paints. Ningura’s paintings mainly depict the mythological travels of her ancestors and the sacred sites in her country.
In 2002, Ningura had the distinction of one of her works being chosen by Australia Post to commemorate its $1.10 stamp. In 2006, she was bestowed the honour of being chosen as the leading female exponent of desert art when included as one of only eight Australian aboriginal artists represented in the Musee du quai Branly, the famous Parisian museum dedicated to indigenous art. Ningura status was further emphasised when the museum decided to have her work superimposed on the ceiling of the building's administrative section.
Ningura Napurrula has exhibited extensively within Australia and internationally in many countries including Italy, Austria, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, USA, United Kingdom and France as well as our own National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.
