Description
Kathleen [Kweyetwemp] Petyarre
A COMPACT TOP SHELF INVESTMENT
AT A BARGAIN BASEMENT PRICE!
TITLE: My Country [Bush Seed Dreaming]
PAINTED IMAGE SIZE: approx 900 x 610 mm [plus border for framing]
COMPLETED: 2009
MEDIUM: Acrylic paint on thick quality pre-primed artist canvas
THE PAINTING: Kathleen has executed a beautiful example of her exquisite fine dot work with a mass of graded rich earthy red, white and yellow ochre dots with ochre lines set against a contrasting black primed background, depicting the Bush Seed Dreaming – one of Kathleen’s two main signature genres.
This stunningly effective piece would undoubtedly enhance any wall – or be an important step into the world of serious indigenous art investment. The photos simply do not do it justice – the richness and depth of colour cannot begin to be generated photographically.

Born: c1940
Place: Atnangkere Soakage, Northern Territory
Tribe: Anmatyerre
Area: Central and Western Desert
Region: Utopia
One of the most collectable living artists in Australia today, Kathleen [or Kweyetwemp in her Eastern Anmatyerre tongue] Petyarre was born on Utopia Station, 270km north east of Alice Springs in The Northern Territory. For the first few years of her life, she wandered around the vast area of her homeland with her father, his three wives, her many siblings and extended family. She first encountered white man in the late 1940s when her name was Anglicised to ‘Kathleen’ and she started her integration into western society, working on various pastoral leases as she grew up.
In 1969 she successfully applied for a job at Utopia school where she stayed for 20 years. During that time she worked on batik design and then progressed her outstanding talent to painting on canvas. In 1996 Kathleen won the prestigious Telstra Award and her painting career has blossomed from there.
But art has always been in her blood. Kathleen is a full sister of the equally renowned artist Gloria Petyarre and a great niece of the late and great Emily Kame Kngwarreye. As testimony to her renowned international fame and collectability - she is one of our more revered living indigenous artists - Kathleen’s works now feature in many prominent public and private galleries and collections the world over.
PROVENANCE: A Certificate of Authenticity with a photo of Kathleen with her work, that she has signed verso.
