Ginseng refers to species within Panax, a genus of 11 species of slow-growing perennial plants with fleshy roots, in the family Araliaceae. They grow in the Northern Hemisphere in eastern Asia (mostly northern China, Korea, and eastern Siberia). Ginseng panax is characterized by the presence of ginsenosides.
It is the original ginseng, and is the one valued most by the Chinese. Today It is very rare in the wild (almost an endangered species) , and is cultivated commercially mostly for sale in the international markets. Panax Ginseng roots are peeled for steaming before drying, which is how they produce Red Ginseng.
The name red ginseng refers to a method of preserving Panax ginseng by steaming it under pressure. Processing by steam is thought to increase the amounts of some active components of Panax ginseng.
White Ginseng is produced by sun-drying the roots. However most Korean Panax Ginseng is sold as Red Ginseng.
While closely related to American ginseng, Panax ginseng contains different chemical substances. It looks similar to American ginseng, with mature plants having three to seven short stems each containing five leaves. One tall central stem bears a cluster of tiny yellow flowers followed by small red berries. Panax ginseng plants generally are larger than American ginseng plants, their roots may be bigger in diameter, and the roots have a sweetish smell. Typically, fresh roots of Panax ginseng are a slightly darker tan colour, as opposed to the natural yellow or cream colour for the roots of American ginseng.
Growing ginseng requires from 80% shade to 85% shade as it grows in the understorey of dense forests. It does not like wet feet however it does like to be moist. There are two ways of growing ginseng 1 is to grow in a natural environment the other is to grow in sheltered controlled beds. The wild ginseng can take about 7 to 10 years to harvest where the controlled ginseng can be harvested in 3 years.
Prices vary from $50-$1800 per kilogram depending on quality. Wild and mature ginseng fetches the highest prices however both the wild and cultivated have in very high demand internationally.
The herbal remedies referred to as "ginseng" are derived from the roots of several plants.
Both American and Panax (Asian) ginseng roots are taken orally as adaptogens, aphrodisiacs, nourishing stimulants, and in the treatment of type II diabetes.
Panax ginseng has been studied for improving memory, treating asthma, and enhancing immune function. It may also help to reduce levels of blood sugar and blood cholesterol. Either orally or topically, it may treat erectile dysfunction and it may also help to relieve some types of male infertility. Possible estrogenic effects need further investigation
It has been difficult to verify the medicinal benefits of ginseng using science, as there are contradictory results from different studies, possibly due to the wide variety and quality of ginseng used in studies. High-quality studies of the effects of ginseng are rare.
Ginseng is promoted as an adaptogen (a product that increases the body's resistance to stress), one which can to a certain extent be supported with reference to its anti-carcinogenic and antioxidant properties.
A recent study at the University of Hong Kong has identified Ginseng to have anti-inflammatory effects. The study found that out of the nine ginsenosides they identified, seven could selectively inhibit expression of the inflammatory gene CXCL-10.
Panax Ginseng appears to inhibit some characteristics associated with cancer in animal models; nevertheless, this effect is unclear in humans.
The root is most often available in dried form, either whole or sliced. Panax Ginseng leaf is not as highly prized as the roots, however it is sometimes also used; as with the root it is most often available in dried form.
This ingredient may also be found in some popular energy drinks: usually the "tea" varieties or in functional foods. It can be found in cosmetic preparations as well, used as a scent and a colouring agent.
