This was George Harrison’s first post-Beatles solo effort and it’s clear from the sheer size of it that he had a lot going on that he wasn’t able to get out during the band’s lifetime. Released as a triple LP, you get a good quantity of music for your money here. Even better, it is very good too. From the better known tracks, like My Sweet Lord and his cover of Dylan’s If Not For You, to the random jams that finish off the set, the standard is high. There’s a lot of hippy mysticism and mild psychedelia, but Harrison was one of the first to start popularising south Asian spirituality in the west, so he can be forgiven that. People don’t rate George Harrison’s guitar work highly enough – it’s good, solid work and the sound is just right for this record. He did do it all with a little help from his friends though – with Phil Spector producing and contributions from Dylan, Clapton and the other Dominoes, Ringo Starr and some names yet to make themselves famous in Yes and Genesis, there was a lot of talent behind this one. Harrison’s own talent is allowed to shine through though, and this album is a tribute to his creativity. It shows the quiet Beatle to be just as talented as his bandmates, and equally deserving of a listen. Cds are as new from my own collection. Played only once.
